A Guide to Content on Your Website
What Should You Put On Your HomePage?
Less is more! The home page of a small website should be a summary page for the focal point of the website. You need to answer some questions for the visitor immediately:
- "Why do I need to look at your website?"
- "Do I belong here?"
- "Do you have what I need?"
The Most Important Question
Sales content on your home page
Any sales pitch on the home page should be stated in terms of how it benefits the reader. People will click through to other pages if you appeal to their needs. Choose your words very carefully, so that people will:
- Have an emotional response
- Get a good picture of what you're offering
- Know exactly which problems your offering solves
- Understand why you're the best (or only) person to get the offering from
Products or Services on your home page
If you're going to have a separate product(s) or service(s) page, then the home page needs to invite the reader to step further into your website. They need to feel as if you have an answer to their problems.
- Be clear about the scope of your services without getting into heavy details
- Make clear statements that either describe or appeal to your target market
- Have visible and obvious links to the page with a product or service that fills a need
- Make it clear that you deliver -- for example give prominent placement to a terrific testimonial
